Quitting the World to Serve God

Published by peregrinus under Ramblings, Spirituality

Have you ever wanted just to quit living  in today’s world  and just serve God?

I am talking removing yourself completely and live a eremitical life.  There are very few places that will allow that type of lifestyle any more.

Nuclear Power

Published by peregrinus under Alternative Energy

Nuclear power hat gotten a bad rap since Three Mile Island.  However, it is not dead.

While I was eating dinner in my hotel room (I am traveling for some training), I overheard a conversation where one said that his power company is building a new nuclear power plant in TX.  If I remember right, Michigan is also looking to build another one.

Easter Triduum at My Parish

Published by peregrinus under Ramblings, Spirituality

I was reading in my parish bulletin that the pastor has designated the Masses for Holy Thursday, and the Easter Vigil, as well as the Good Friday Ceremony will all be in the Extraordinary form.

As far as Holy Thursday and Good Friday, that does not really bother me since I usually do not attend those (although my Spiritual Director would like me to).

Where the issue come is the Easter Vigil. I prefer going to that Mass because it is usually less crowded and I do not have to put up with the two-timers (i.e. only show up Christmas and Easter).

I am not a fan of the Extraordinary Mass but do recognize it validity and necessity. I just have been turn off by those who constantly bash the Ordinary Form of the Mass (their hate seems to rival the left’s hatred for Bush). I still, however, may go since it is the Easter Vigil and I am thinking of volunteering to be a RCIA sponsor if there is a need for one next year.

Spiritual Adoption of a Priest

Published by peregrinus under Spirituality

I recently attended a 3 day silent retreat for the Confraternity I am now an Associate Member of.

One of the programs being promoted at the retreat was the Spiritual Adoption of a Priest. I signed up for it while at the the retreat.

When I got home today, I had a packet from the Confraternity. Turns out it was the details on the Spiritual Adoption. The person assigned to me is not yet a priest, but one of the brothers of the Order associated with the Confraternity. He is currently a Seminarian (I am assuming he is at their seminary in Brazil).

Should be interesting and I am hoping for reports on his progress.

Ethanol sources

Published by peregrinus under Alternative Energy

People keep harping on how ethanol is driving prices up for food and we should concentrate on methanol.

We can get alot of the cellulose from what is thrown away from currently farmed land. We only use the grain. The rest of the plant (cellulose) is thrown away.

Also, there is switchgrass which could be planted and cut several times a year. It can also be grown on marginal land thus give materials and prevent soil erosion. Some other properties of switch grass:

Switchgrass is a hardy, perennial rhizomatous grass which begins growth in late spring. It can grow up to 1.8-2.2 m high but is typically shorter than Big Bluestem grass or Indiangrass. The leaves are 30-90 cm long, with a prominent midrib. Switchgrass uses C4 carbon fixation, giving it an advantage in conditions of drought and high temperature. Its flowers have a well-developed panicle, often up to 60 cm long and bear a good crop of fruits. The fruits are 3-6 mm long and up to 1.5 mm wide, and are developed from a single-flowered spikelet. Both glumes are present and well developed. When ripe, the seeds sometimes take on a pink or dull-purple tinge, and turn golden brown with the foliage of the plant in the fall. Switchgrass is a self-seeding crop, which means farmers do not have to plant and re-seed after harvesting. Also, unlike corn, switchgrass can grow on marginal lands and require little or no fertilizer to thrive.

Right now, we have land that is not being cultivated. That land can be used too.

In addition, here in Michigan, they are talking about using certain trees which are considered evasive (i.e. weed trees). These are fast growing trees that are not good for anything right now.

So you see, there is many sources that can be used that will not take anything out of the food chain.

Yes, methanol should be a component, but so should ethanol.

Eugenics out of favor?

Published by peregrinus under Apologetics, Ramblings

On another site, someone said that eugenics has fallen out of favor.

Is eugenics out of favor? I must disagree. Genetics have brought it to a whole new level. They now test for “possible defects” and try to force infanticide on women whose child have these “possible defects”. Even after the child is born, some advocate infanticide up to a certain age.

Eugenics gone? Not by a long shot.
