Hi There -

I had been reading some previous blog entries on the Catholic Answers site, and I came across some research you did awhile ago on a possible older vocation you might have had. I didn't see any follow-up on that, and was curious what happened to you. I'm 35 and I'm beginning to wonder whether I was wrong in pushing aside the possibility of a vocation back in high school, and whether it's too late for me now to even think about going down the discernment road.

Thanks and sorry to have bothered you - William

Comment on Charities. Do we really give in line with the Teachings of the Catholic Church? by Shoshana

This is very wise to scrutinize our charities. Although there are charities that have made themselves plump with other peoples' money, I believe it is the intention of the donor that counts with the Lord. In the end, it is the charity that will be held responsible before the Lord.

What is the worst is when donated money could be used for actions that are against Catholic teaching. That scares me the most. I have been praying and pondering about the charity that I should donate to. Up to now, since I pray a lot for our priests/seminarians/deacons, it looks like I will be donating towards towards new communities (Companions of the Cross which is growing in leaps), Fr Groeschel's community or even priests in Iraq, etc. My grandmother would save her pennies to be able to finance one priest. And she had nine living children! I want to follow her example and support the priests not only with my prayer but with my pennies also...

I do not know if society (man) is beyond redemption, it really is not mine to say...although my feelings parallel those of the author. My favourite devotion is Divine Mercy. I have read the 700 Diary at least three times. I take consolation in what Jesus says in bringing the most hardened sinners to Him as no one really prays for them. It also says the wrath of God the Father is held back by Faustina herself and in different apparitions, Our Lady. This is a sobering reality.

In the book, we read that there will be a Polish Pope that would come and prepare the world for the End Days. Back in Faustina's day, there were only Italian Popes. Little did one know that we would experience a Polish one! So the prophecy was correct....and we are being prepared for the end times as it were. And yet man has still more time to pervert himself. Animal/human embryos, same sex marriage, abortion on demand, AIDS, etc etc etc.

One of the greatest solutions is to pray the Divine Mercy, the rosary, etc. for the intentions of those who have turned their backs on the Lord. We can also write letters, voice our concern, etc. This would be part of evangelizing. We will be criticized and laughed at...that is when we know that we are truly following Jesus: if the world hates us (Bishop Sheen).

You wrote: "One bright note, I expect that, like the housing market, the commodity markets may be in for a crash."

I have no doubt that the commodity markets will crash, but you can bet that the speculators will not go down alone. I wouldn't say that this is a "bright spot", though it may satisfy some sense of justice. I'm afraid we're all in for a bumpy ride, with the sin of greed blindfolded in the driver's seat.

I agree with you -- between the speculators and the chicken-little-sky-is-falling crowd (self-fulfilling prophecies), the rest of us barely stand a chance. It may be small comfort, but the worst of the speculators, at the end of their earthly life, will have to answer to God for all the people they added to the ranks of the poverty-stricken. Getting wealthy from honest effort and hard work is one thing; getting wealthy on the broken backs of the poor is altogether another thing.

WA, I too pray for you so that things become more clear. Actually, you are in my prayers often. :-) I am still praying my rosary for priests on my MP3 by Fr Kevin Scallom and Dana. Beautiful rosary. Time isn't with me to do the rosary on the thread at this point. Too much work. Maybe later....

God bless you!
